Rehabilitation Center in Corvallis, OR for Pre- and Post-Surgery Rehab
Encore Physical Therapy handles pre- and post-surgery rehabilitation for the knee, shoulder, back, neck, foot, hip and more, along with the orthopedic, balance and neurological cases that bring most people to a rehabilitation center in the first place.

At a glance
Encore Physical Therapy is a rehabilitation center at 2609 NW 9th Street in Corvallis, Oregon, open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. We provide pre- and post-surgical rehab for knee, shoulder, back, neck, foot and hip cases, plus balance, gait and neurological therapy for patients from their teens through their nineties across Benton and Linn Counties.
- Evaluations within a couple of weeks, not months on a waiting list
- Direct access clinic. In Oregon you can usually start PT without a doctor's referral
- Medicare and most commercial insurance accepted. Cash pay available
- One-on-one evaluation with a licensed physical therapist, not a hand-off
What rehabilitation at Encore covers
Rehabilitation here means restoring motion, strength and confidence in a specific part of your body after an injury, an operation, or years of gradual decline. The conditions we treat in this program include:
Surgery and major joints
Hip and Knee
— joint replacement recovery, knee pain and instability, patellofemoral problems (pain around the kneecap), and hip pain and stiffness
Hip and knee rehab covers joint replacement recovery, knee pain and instability, patellofemoral problems (pain around the kneecap), and hip pain and stiffness that limits walking, stairs and getting up from a chair. Post-op work moves through motion first, then strength, then the loading and balance demands of real life.
Hikers and trail walkers dealing with downhill knee pain can read more on our hiking and backpacking page.

Shoulder
— Rotator cuff tears and shoulder pain
Shoulder rehab includes rotator cuff tears, general shoulder pain, and recovery after shoulder surgery, where regaining motion on schedule matters and pushing too early does not help. Treatment blends manual therapy at the joint and surrounding soft tissue with a graded strengthening progression for the cuff and scapular muscles.
Swimmers working through overhead shoulder trouble can also see our swimming and triathlon page.

Back, feet and arthritis
Back and Neck
— Low back pain, neck pain, sacroiliac (SI) joint pain, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis
Back and neck cases make up a large share of what a rehabilitation center sees, including low back pain, neck pain, sacroiliac (SI) joint pain, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis and post-surgical spine care. Treatment usually combines hands-on manual therapy with a specific exercise progression you'll also do at home.
Our therapists draw on established manual therapy systems including McKenzie, Maitland, Kaltenborn, Mulligan, Strain Counterstrain, Muscle Energy and techniques from the North American Institute of Manual Therapy. Which ones we use depends on what your exam shows. If lifting is part of your life or your job, our strength training and CrossFit rehab page covers loading back up safely.

Foot and Ankle
— Foot and ankle pain and dysfunction, sprains, strains and fractures
Foot and ankle dysfunction shows up as pain with the first steps of the morning, an ankle that keeps rolling, or a slow return after a fracture or foot surgery. We treat sprains, strains, fractures and post-surgical foot and ankle cases, and we look at how you're walking, because a limp you've carried for six weeks tends to create a second problem up the chain.

Arthritis and Degenerative Conditions
— Arthritis, degenerative joint disease and osteoporosis
Arthritis, degenerative joint disease, degenerative disc disease and osteoporosis are long-term conditions, and rehab for them is about keeping joints moving, keeping muscle on your frame, and keeping you doing the things you'd rather not give up. We also see patients with fibromyalgia.
If joint replacement is on the horizon, this is also where pre-surgical preparation starts. Ask us about it when you get in touch.

Balance, nerves and injuries
Balance and Gait
— Balance disorders, gait related problems and loss of strength
Balance disorders, gait related problems and general loss of strength are treated here, and they matter most for patients who have had a fall or who are worried about one. Work typically includes standing and walking balance training, lower body strengthening, and practical strategies for stairs, curbs and uneven ground.
Medicare is accepted, and you do not need a referral to start. Call (541) 758-2235 and we'll check your plan.

Neurological
— Neurological illness and injury
We treat neurological illness and injury, including the loss of strength, coordination, balance and walking ability that often comes with it. Chris Guempel, PT, MPT has treated a broad spectrum of diagnoses across his career, including postoperative, orthopedic, neurological and work-related cases.
Not sure whether we're the right fit for your diagnosis? Call (541) 758-2235 and ask. We'd rather tell you honestly on the phone than have you drive over for nothing.

Auto and Work Injuries
— Motor vehicle accident injuries, on-the-job injuries and repetitive strain
Motor vehicle accident injuries, on-the-job injuries and repetitive strain follow their own path, both clinically and administratively. Clinically, the work is the same careful process: find the source of the symptoms, treat it hands-on, and rebuild the strength and tolerance the injury took away.
If your care is going through an auto claim or a workers' compensation claim, call (541) 758-2235 with your claim information before your first visit and our front desk will tell you exactly what we need to get billing set up correctly.

We also treat:
- Pre-surgery preparation, so you go into the operation with as much strength and motion as possible
- Soft tissue injuries to muscle, tendon, ligament and cartilage
- Posture problems, scoliosis, and minor finger and hand injuries
Athletic and return-to-sport work has its own home on our Sports Medicine pages. If you're not sure which side of the line you fall on, call (541) 758-2235 and we'll sort it out on the phone.
Pre- and Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Surgery repairs the structure. Rehab is what turns that repair back into a working knee, shoulder or spine. We take patients before the operation to build strength and range of motion ahead of time, and after the operation to work back through swelling, stiffness, guarding and the loss of strength that comes with weeks of limited use.
Your plan is built around your surgery, your surgeon's timeline and what you're actually trying to get back to, whether that's stairs without a rail, sleeping on that shoulder again, or a full day on your feet at work. We don't chase symptoms. We teach you what's happening in your body and practice evidence-based care so you understand why each piece of the plan exists.

“My physical therapy after shoulder surgery at Encore PT went smoothly, progressing from focus on range of motion and flexibility to strengthening when the repairs were suitably healed.”
How rehabilitation works here
- Evaluation, one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist. A thorough exam to identify the source of your symptoms, not just where it hurts. You'll leave understanding what we found.
- A plan built with you. Treatment depends on the diagnosis and on your goals, which means you're part of setting them.
- Hands-on treatment plus prescriptive exercise. Manual therapy techniques applied to the affected area, paired with exercises you'll do in the clinic and at home to restore flexibility, strength and integrity to the injured tissue.
- Modalities where they help. Heat or cold early on to reduce pain and inflammation, ultrasound or electrical stimulation to reduce pain or improve muscle activity, and taping when it supports the healing process.
- Reassessment. If you aren't showing improvement, we change the course of treatment. That's the point of seeing the same therapist each visit.

Insurance, Medicare and cash pay
- Medicare accepted
- Most commercial insurance plans
- Cash pay available
- No doctor’s referral needed to start
We accept Medicare and most commercial insurance plans, and cash pay is available if you'd rather not run care through insurance. We won't guess at your coverage. Call (541) 758-2235 with your plan information and our front desk will check the specifics for you before you commit to anything.
You also don't need a doctor's referral to begin. Encore is a direct access clinic, which means Oregon patients can generally self-refer and start physical therapy on their own.
Questions We Hear a Lot
How soon can I get an evaluation?
We can typically schedule a new patient evaluation within a couple of weeks. Call (541) 758-2235 and reception will work to get back to you within a business day to set up a time.
What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit is a one-on-one evaluation with a licensed physical therapist. We'll talk through what happened and what you want to get back to, look at how you move to find the source of the problem, and then explain what we found and what your plan looks like.
What should I bring?
Your insurance card and a photo ID, a list of the medications you take, and any paperwork from your surgeon or doctor, including post-op instructions or a referral if you have one. Wear clothes that let us see and move the area we're treating: shorts for a knee or hip, a loose shirt or tank top for a shoulder.
I'm already a few weeks out from surgery. Is it too late to start rehab?
No. The plan starts from where you are today, whether that's before your operation, the week after, or well into your recovery. If your surgeon gave you a protocol, bring it. Your plan is built around your surgeon's timeline, and we're glad to coordinate with your surgeon along the way.
Will physical therapy hurt?
Some exercises and hands-on work can be uncomfortable, especially early after surgery, but therapy shouldn't leave you worse off. Tell your therapist what you're feeling. We adjust to what your body is ready for, because pushing too early doesn't help.
Where are you located and what are your hours?
Encore Physical Therapy is at 2609 NW 9th Street, Corvallis, OR 97330, open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. We see patients from Corvallis, Albany, Philomath, Newport and across Benton and Linn Counties.
